Q&A session with Jamshedpur FC defender Wungngayam Muirang
The 24 year old defender from Manipur has previously played for a slew of top teams like Bengaluru FC, Gokulam FC and FC Pune City and is excited about his new journey at ISL side Jamshedpur FC.
1. How did you get into football? When did you decide to become a professional footballer?
I decided to become a professional footballer after joining SAI back in 2010.
2. Growing up, which team did you support? Who is your favourite player?
I remember supporting Manchester City, watching most of the games of Yaya Toure’s and yes, my favourite player is Toni Kroos.
3. What’s your take on the professional football scene in India?
It’s improving massively as you can see the quality of the game improving every year.
4. At just 24, you have already played for many top teams including your current team Jamshedpur FC. What are your short and long-term goals?
The goal remains the same. I would love to play as long as I can and after that, I will focus on coaching.
5. You must be ecstatic after joining Jamshedpur FC and playing in the ISL. What is the overall experience like, at the new club? Which game are you most looking forward to in the new season?
Adapting to the weather and training well with the new players and coaches.
I am looking forward to getting the chance to play against my former team Bengaluru FC.
6. How is pre-season going and what are you looking forward to this season?
Pre-season is always tough as you know most of our time is spent running (chuckles). It’s a long season so I’ll look to maintain my fitness, play most of the matches and, hopefully, win the trophy.
7. What has been the most memorable game you’ve played and watched so far?
Playing against AIFF in IFA Shield semi-final in which I scored the equalizing goal for a 1-1 draw. We ended up winning the game via a penalty shootout.
8. Which player would you like to emulate in your game? Also, who is your football mentor?
It would be Aymeric Laporte. I do not have a mentor.
9. What does it feel like to play alongside so many top Indian and international players?
It’s a privilege to play with so many superstars, learning from the best on and off the pitch.
10. What’s the best thing about being a professional footballer?
Discipline.
11. What has been the toughest challenge in your professional life?
Struggling through injuries for many months.
12. What would you advise other aspiring footballers on the come-up?
Work hard and be disciplined. Have patience and never give up. Trust the Lord.
